Retarded children are realists. They know what it is to be rejected, because they have been rejected many times. These children want affection, yes. But most of all, they need to be accepted as human beings. They need to feel useful. People don’t want to face such things. Human beings hate things that are mysterious to them. But I think shining a spotlight on such things can make people understand and want to help.
